Blindfolded ‘Super Mario 64’ Player Sets ‘Impossible’ Record: ‘Do It’

The Super Mario 64 community is in disbelief after a new record was set.

Bubzia, a “Super Mario 64” speed runner, completed the game’s 16-star challenge in less than 20 minutes – while blindfolded and unable to see the screen.

It took Bubzia 118 days to complete the Nintendo game in under 20 minutes, having previously set the world record at 22 minutes and 23 seconds.

With a blindfold on his face, Bubzia sped up the game in 19 minutes and 43 seconds in his YouTube video released on October 2.

“After 10 months of restless grinding, 118 days / rivers of practice, runs and more, the most ambitious goal in SM64 blindfolded was finally broken,” Bubzia wrote in the description of his video.

He continued: “I am extremely happy that I have overcome all the difficulties that this challenge has thrown at me. It’s been a really fun blast, there’s been so many new viewers of blindfolded sprints in general, and a lot of them have stood behind me taking on the challenge every day for the past year.”

“Honestly I don’t have much to say about the run,” continued Bubzia, “it can still improve and maybe I’ll be back one day. But as cliche as it may sound, the far more important part than me breaking this milestone and world record is the absolutely amazing and kind community I have. Thank you all so much!”

Bubzia then promised to break the record of 70 stars next.

Other members of the Super Mario 64 community commented on Bubzia’s video to congratulate her on the big achievement.

“This will be one of the most important moments in Mario 64’s speed run, if not speed as a whole,” wrote one person.

“Wow, congratulations Bubzia! Your dedication and determination is truly inspiring. 118 days man, you deserve all the respect”, says another comment.

Someone else said: “The most optimized blindfold run ever! So many improvements and merging of strategies and ideas: you made the impossible possible!!”

“Not real my friend! You have ascended to immortality!” another player commented.

“Unbelievable entry! I was watching the start of this run live but had to leave. Legend!” added a fifth person.

Bubzia previously gave the Super Mario 64 community an update on his blindfolded speed racing journey 100 days after it began in January.

“You do maybe one run a day — of a 3-hour broadcast — where you go through the first stage. It was extremely frustrating to run that. I can’t overstate how difficult that was,” he said in a video from September.

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996, becoming the first Super Mario game to feature 3D gameplay.

It is the best-selling Nintendo 64 game of all time.
